Spaying or Neutering
Spaying or neutering helps solve the serious problem of dog overpopulation, and it provides important health benefits for your pet. Neutering or spaying also makes most dogs friendlier and easy to live with. Spayed females are more relaxed than dogs that have not been spayed. Another benefit of spaying and neutering is that it minimizes the risk of cancer of the reproductive organs and mammary glands in females.
- Spaying — Spaying is the procedure of removing the uterus and ovaries from your female dog, usually after 6 months of age. This is a major surgical procedure and is performed under anesthesia. Your dog is usually kept overnight, and recovery usually takes about two weeks.
- Neutering — Neutering is the procedure of removing a male dog's testicles. An incision is made at the base of the scrotum and is usually performed at six months old. Neutering is also performed under anesthesia. Your dogs will most likely stay overnight at our hospital, and the recovery time is seven to ten days.
Basic Health Checks for Puppies
Make an appointment for your new puppy to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. You can expect the following during your first visit:
- Thorough physical examination
- Check for external parasites and internal parasites
- Initial vaccination and/or discussion about vaccinations your puppy needs
- Consultation about whether your puppy should be spayed/neutered
Making a New Puppy Feel Comfortable
Get your puppy acquainted with its new home and surroundings. Make sure your puppy knows where he or she is supposed to eat, sleep, and eliminate. Your puppy may be overwhelmed in the beginning because it's not used to your home. Just give him or her time to settle in. If you have small children in your home, make sure they know that your puppy is not a new toy. At eight weeks, your pup is old enough to learn obedience commands. This is a good time to start training your puppy
Exams and Vet Services for Geriatric Dogs
As your dog ages, good nutrition, regular exercise, and scheduled veterinarian appointments are all important factors in keeping him or her healthy. During the aging process, changes will occur in the dog's metabolism. If you pay attention to your dog’s behavior, you will detect problems easier. 9 Tel Animal Hospital provides a full range of services for older dogs.
